I began as an art student, majoring in painting & printmaking.  I always had an interest in what makes people tick and therefore many of my electives were in psychology and sociology.  After Pratt, I studied Art Therapy at George Washington University, then continued at Seton Hall for an Ed. S. in Marriage & Family Therapy.  I worked for a few hospital based clinics for several years before entering full time private practice in 1995.
My practice has evolved from my own strong feelings, based on continued evidence, that although we are all born with certain personality traits, our lives are shaped by our earliest relationships.  If our earliest "home" was unsafe, if we did not experience secure attachment, we will have difficulty experiencing it in adulthood.  Yet, connection is what we all seek and need.  We are designed to bond with another human being in a physical and emotional way---called love.   Most relationships will experience stress at one time or another.  I have found EFT(Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy) to be particularly helpful because it acknowledges the following :

  • Change involves new emotional experiences
  • Rigid interaction patterns are merely someone's best method of coping with emotional threat
  • Relationship problems are no one's fault
  • The therapist is a process consultant
